Threat Intelligence Lab

As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, cyber attacks are growing in both frequency and sophistication. Cyber security research is therefore essential, not only to protect the UK’s national security, but also to maintain its scientific leadership and global competitiveness. In response, the UK has made significant investments in high-performance computing infrastructure to support long-term cyber defence through a range of national initiatives.

The Threat Intelligence Lab stands at the forefront of data-driven cyber security research, fostering an advanced environment focused on both reactive threat detection and proactive threat prediction. The Lab is equipped with an IoT testbed and a state-of-the-art GPU server to support cutting-edge AI processing. Its reactive research earned the prestigious Samsung Award for pioneering work in securing Internet of Things (IoT) devices. On the proactive side, the team has developed large-scale, data-driven forecasting techniques to support strategic policy-making - work that has recently been recognised and funded by NATO as the first long-term proactive approach of its kind.

Led by Dr Paul Yoo, the Lab is home to a growing team of nearly 30 academics, research staff, affiliates and postgraduate students, a number expected to increase significantly in the years ahead.
