A true independent, who has been peripatetic for much of his career, moving between the US, Ireland and Asia, Jon Jost continues to make startlingly beautiful and quite unique films. For this visit to London and BIMI, he has chosen COMING TO TERMS, a film made in Butte Montana, which Jonathan Rosenbaum described as having a ‘exquisitely meditative sense of visual surface and texture with his tragic sense of how America has been losing its soul, making this for me in some ways his greatest feature’.
Jost was an early and inventive adopted of working on DV. Indeed he made an ‘accidental film’ with it on a visit to Britain in 1997, LONDON BRIEF. But before COMING TO TERMS we’ll be showing a later work 6 EASY PIECES made during the late 90s, which he describes as ‘a compilation of shots and sequences… which seemed to draw together by gravitational attraction’. It’s also It is also ‘a commentary on contemporary arts, past history, creative energies, society, and… a grab-bag of the author’s interests, from social observations to the usage of symmetry in religious architecture and music’.
