Overview
The Ethical Influence and Persuasion short course explores the art and science of persuasion and influence in organisational and market-facing settings. You will learn about the psychological principles of persuasion and influence such as authority, social proof and cognitive dissonance, and you will explore practical applications for influencing with integrity, whilst recognising and resisting unethical influence.
Influence is widely recognised as an important business skill, and this course will provide you with the fundamental tools that are used by successful practitioners and insights on how to apply these to practical scenarios in an ethical manner.
You will gain an understanding of:
- key principles of influence and persuasion
- ethical considerations of persuasion techniques
- ways for leaders to build connection, reduce uncertainty and motivate to action
- examples of group influence and dynamics
- how to prepare strategically for influence scenarios
- approaches for protecting against unwanted influence
- the psychological background of influence mechanisms.
The Ethical Influence and Persuasion course is ideal if you are a current or aspiring manager or leader wishing to enhance your leadership and influencing skills. The course is also useful for professionals spending a lot of time pitching internally and externally in their roles, or needing to produce and write convincing copy.
You will receive a Birkbeck certificate of participation upon completion of the course.
This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.

This short course has no prerequisites.
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.
